harness your curiosity

From 11 to 16 December 2023, 82 selected participants from all ASEAN Member States have develop their skills in fundamental HPC technology and programming to access local and international HPC platforms with proficiency.

expand your network

During the school, students gain exposure to international collaboration opportunities in an EU-ASEAN context. On the last day of the programme, students were invited to an industrial event organised by BRIN to meet potential employers from across the region.

Now more than ever, High Performance Computing or HPC forges ahead in assisting engineers; data scientists; designers; researchers or generally help humanity to address complex challenges in far less time and at far less cost, compared to traditional computing

One of the key message to future student would be that there is no knowledge that is useless and there is no knowledge that is too hard to learn. So, if you are in the domain then you are going to make use of HPC one way or another or even in the future. Coming to this EU-ASEAN HPC school would be the wonderful way for you to open up a new world. You will be able to learn so much in a short program that consists of maybe five, six days of intensive learning. But, you will realise that all these information on your own would be rather impossible to obtain. So, it is a fantastic opportunity for you to kickstart something

Background

All over the world, HPC is increasingly used to solve complex problems in our societies. Scientists from the ASEAN region have followed the trend and harnessed their knowledge and skills of HPC from various institutions. In September 2019, some ASEAN Member States students participated in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) summer school on HPC, held in Barcelona. Three months later, in December 2019, a delegation of senior ASEAN scientists followed a week-long training at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre. These exchanges led to a heightened awareness about the importance of increasing HPC skills and fluency in the ASEAN region.

The idea of a shared ASEAN HPC facility was identified by the ASEAN Task Force in 2018. A year later, the EU and ASEAN initiated discussions regarding the importance of increasing access to HPC to EU and ASEAN scientists. From this, the ASEAN High-Performance Computing (HPC) School was envisioned: the first regional HPC school in ASEAN that cooperates with European and international experts. The school was first announced at the Supercomputing Asia conference’s EU-ASEAN-Japan Symposium on 4 March 2021, and held virtually in July 2021.

This school is supported by the Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI) E-READI, a demand-driven instrument that supports ASEAN regional integration by strengthening EU-ASEAN networks and exchanging knowledge and experience in policy areas of joint interests.

Besides engaging EU and ASEAN policy makers, E-READI facilitates ongoing and new dialogues with the civil society, private sector, and other relevant stakeholders across various policy areas. The school contributes to the standing EU-ASEAN Dialogue Meeting on Science and Technology and the EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership.
