About

High-Performance Computing (HPC) collects and processes a huge amount of data that can help solve regional and global problems. The increasing reliance on technology to solve societal challenges underscored the importance of increasing HPC skills and fluency in the ASEAN region.

In March 2021, the EU-ASEAN High-Performance Computing (HPC) School was established to address this need. The HPC School is a one-week program for exceptional ASEAN researchers primarily at the postgraduate level with a curriculum taught by international luminaries in HPC technology from Europe, Japan, ASEAN, and beyond. This school is carried out in the
Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI) framework.

Background

All over the world, HPC is increasingly used to solve complex problems in our societies. Scientists from the ASEAN region have followed the trend and harnessed their knowledge and skills of HPC from various institutions. In September 2019, some ASEAN Member States students participated in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) summer school on HPC, held in Barcelona. Three months later, in December 2019, a delegation of senior ASEAN scientists followed a week-long training at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre. These exchanges led to a heightened awareness about the importance of increasing HPC skills and fluency in the ASEAN region.

The idea of a shared ASEAN HPC facility was identified by the ASEAN Task Force in 2018. A year later, the EU and ASEAN initiated discussions regarding the importance of increasing access to HPC to EU and ASEAN scientists. From this, the ASEAN High-Performance Computing (HPC) School was envisioned: the first regional HPC school in ASEAN that cooperates with European and international experts. The school was first announced at the Supercomputing Asia conference’s EU-ASEAN-Japan Symposium on 4 March 2021, and held virtually in July 2021.

The 2021 school was hosted virtually by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) Supercomputer Center (ThaiSC), Thailand, and organised by the ASEAN HPC Task Force (HPCTF) and carried out in the framework of Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI).

As a follow-up to the first school and its preparation activities that began in 2019, the second edition of the EU-ASEAN HPC School took place in person at Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand from the 5-10 December 2022 with the endorsement of the European Union Delegation to ASEAN, ASEAN Secretariat, Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), and the private sector.
